Doodle Fun

We have finally made it back to the land of the living (okay that might be a tad on the dramatic side). What I mean is I’m feeling a lot better now and nearly fully recovered. Thank you all for the lovely comments and well wishes while I was ill.
As promised I’m making a post of the best doodles I did while flu ridden. Apologies for the random writing around the doodles. These doodles were done while professor YouTube was educating me on the workings of Hangul (the Korean alphabetic system) and Katakana (one of the Japanese syllabic writing systems) and I sort of practiced a little on the page while doodling and watching YouTube videos (Had to do something to occupy my mind. Lying in bed, staring at the ceiling was dreadfully boring, so I might as well have used the time to educate myself. Also writing systems are really interesting).

thumbnail_20180918_175958So, this is the first page, I was really into doodling little men that day. If you’re wondering about the Hangul (writing) on this page, it’s mostly just random words and me using what I learnt to complain about having the flu.

thumbnail_20180918_181119This is my favourite doodle on this page. There are a few guidelines showing, but it’s still really cute.

thumbnail_20180918_181350Although, this turned out a little crooked (probably because it was drawn from a weird angle), I still really like this doodle, too.

thumbnail_20180918_181226Not a fan of this doodle, as you can tell (but in saying that, high fever me thought the speech bubble was fringing hilarious. God, I must have been delirious, at that point).

thumbnail_20180918_180448The second page is a little busier. I’m a little more familiar with Katakana, so was listening more than watching the screen (meaning more doodling). Katakana is phonetic and is used for translating non-Japanese words into Japanese. This includes names, so I decided to give my doodles names using Katakana (boredom was very strong at this point).

thumbnail_20180918_182422I’m extremely proud of this little dog, Tobi. I doodled him in under 2 minutes and he turn really good. (If you’re wondering what the fox and fish are called, I named the fox Toboe and the fish Tuna.)

thumbnail_20180918_182936 (1)A little close up of the stick people tree. Stick people are a hell of a lot of fun to doodle. If you’re feeling stressed or horrible, I highly recommend doodling stick people. It’ll cheer you right up.

So that was my doodles. Hope you enjoyed them. I have to take it easy for the next while (don’t want to get really sick again), so thanks for your patience and…
As always Thanks for reading.

Finds of the Week

This week has been kind of crazy, everywhere I turned someone wanted my help with something or was looking me to come somewhere in the car with them, to keep them company. Pretty sure at this point, I’ve travelled the length and breadth of the country. But sure, I’m not going to complain, it’s nice to feel useful and although it was a busy week it was also kind of fun.

Unfortunately, this has meant I haven’t had a great deal of time to work on stuff for this blog. So, instead of posting nothing this week, I’ve decided to take this opportunity to try something I’ve wanted to do on this blog for some time. This little venture is called “Finds of the Week” and will consist of some of the cool, interesting or just plain weird things, I’ve found on YouTube during the week.

So, without further ado I bring to you this week’s, Finds of the Week:

Finger dance: BTS- IDOL

This is kind of strange but one has to admit it is rather cool. I have no clue how these people are able to bend their hands like that, but it really impressive.

Chickenpella – Disney

Man plays songs with a rubber chicken, while people sing. Sad thing is this guy can play the rubber chicken better than I can play any instrument.

Tokyo Ghoul – Unravel (cover by Big Marvel)

For all the Tokyo Ghoul fans, I’ve included Big Marvel’s cover of Unravel I found this week. Here he plays the rubber pig and duck, as well as the rubber chicken. (Also, that person in the background staring at him, eating a sandwich is hilarious)

The Life of Death

A beautifully drawn short film about the sad life of death. It would be pretty awful if everything you touched died. I found this film quite a while ago, but found myself re-watching it this week so put it on the list.

THE GREATEST SHOWMAN – Rewrite The Stars (#WITHOUTMUSIC parody)

Really didn’t want to overload this post with K-pop, so was only going to share Rewrite the Stars without music. However, the Fake Love without music was too funny not to share.

BTS – Fake Love (#WITHOUTMUSIC Parody)

If you’re really into K-pop, there’s also BTS- Idol without music (and a few other BTS songs) and BLACKPINK- Ddu-Du Ddu-Du without music. There both pretty strange but funny.

As you can tell this week’s YouTubeing was a little on the strange side (it can be a lot stranger). I hope you’ve enjoyed this post and if you’d like me to make more posts like this, let me know in the comments below.

As always, Thanks for reading.

The Drawing Style Challenge

I’ve seen this challenge done so many times and always wanted to try it for myself. But as usual, I didn’t have the confidence to give it a go. To tell the truth, I thought I wouldn’t be able to draw in different styles and would make a mess of the challenge. However, I’m trying a new approach, called self-belief and I’m now at least, giving the things I think I’m too rubbish to do, a go. So, without further delay I give to you, my attempt at the Drawing Style Challenge.

thumbnail_20180530_225246For anyone wondering what this challenge is about, it’s where you choose a selection of cartoon or animation styles and attempt to draw yourself in each style. I have chosen 6 styles and have used Gouache paint for the coloured drawing (because I need more practice with them). I’ve decided to be really creative with this challenge, so I hope you enjoy.

Tim Burton (Nel-Ward Scissorhands)

thumbnail_20180530_225515Edward Scissorhands is my favourite Tim Burton character, so for this style I went with drawing myself like Edward Scissorhands. While still including some of the trademarks of Tim Burton’s style. Hence, Nel-Ward Scissorhands was born.

Pokémon (Not quite right Charmander)

thumbnail_20180530_230037Why draw yourself as a human, when you can be an extremely cute fire-breathing pocket monster. I drew myself as a not quite right Charmander, because if I was a Pokémon I wouldn’t want to fight other Pokémon, to an inch of their life. I’d rather befriend the other Pokémon (hence why I drew the flower). I’d essentially be Olaf from frozen, in Charmander form.

thumbnail_20180530_225413Also, Charmander is my favourite starter Pokémon.

Adventure Time (Princess Blue)

thumbnail_20180530_230403As a style, I find Adventure Time very cute, creative and funny at times. I decided to keep in trend with the shows endless number of princesses and turned myself into Princess Blue. Also, humans in this show seem pretty plops, compared to the other characters. So, I wasn’t drawing myself as one of them.

South Park

thumbnail_20180530_231145I had a little trouble creating skin tone with the Gouache paint and couldn’t achieve that weird tone of most of the South Park characters. So, I ended up just settling with the usual paint combination, I’d use with watercolours. Other, then that little disaster I think I done an okay job of this style.

The Walking Dead Comic

thumbnail_20180530_232156Since the previous attempts went so well, I decided to challenge myself a little bit more. The Walking Dead Comic has some really cool art work and is something I really like. However, as I’ve learnt it’s a very hard style to draw in and all I’m going to say about this attempt is, I love how that sword handle turned out. Best darn sword handle, I’ve ever drawn.

We Bare Bears (Sun Bear)

thumbnail_20180530_233059Art style wise, I really like how We Bare Bear is drawn. For this style, I drew myself as a Sun Bear, because again why be human when you can be a cute bear. Also, I’ve recently learnt that sun bears are a rather short bears and are only around 5ft tall. I am also only around 5ft tall, so I can relate to the sun bear’s shortness.

This has been the most fun art challenges, I’ve taken part in so far and because of that, I’ve decided to make a part 2. I want to make sure this is still fun for you guys, too. So, I’m going to let you guys decide which styles I draw in part 2. All you have to do is let me know in the comments below, which cartoon, comic, manga, anime or animation style (or styles), you’d like to see me attempt next.
Thank you in advance to anyone taking part. I appreciate all your suggestions, very much.

As always, hope you’ve enjoyed this post and Thanks for reading.

Cold, Lost and Left with Sal (Comic Strip Chapter 4)

From seeing people go crazy over the smallest things the comment section of YouTube videos, I feel like I should put a warning before this chapter. Just in case someone gets offended at some very mild suggestiveness (emphasis on the word mild) and tries to scream at me in the comments. So here it is:

Warning: This chapter contains some very, very mild suggestiveness and the slightest show of skin (anime legs to be precise). If you are of an extremely sensitive nature and/or easily offended, you may want to refrain from reading this chapter. This comic strip is for entertainment purposes and not intended to offend.

Chapter 4: The Call of Home

This Comic Strip reads left to right.

Hopefully you’ve taken the body pillow in good humour and don’t want to verbally assault me in the comments (YouTube is a scary place. I once seen some poor wee guy get hounded by a bunch of social thugs, for having a cutout of his waifu in the background of his videos. It was so brutal).

Hope you’re enjoying this comic strip and as always, Thanks for reading.

Liebster Awards and So Much More (Part 3)

I took a wee break there from responding to award, to get the comic strip up and running. It’s up and running fine now, so time to get back on track with responding to them all. This time I’ve combined Liebster and Unique.

Liebster Award

img_5527I was nominated this time by the brilliant Moyatori. Thank you so much for the nomination. I very much appreciate it and think everyone should show Moyatori some love and go check out their blog.

Rules:

  • Share the link of the blogger who has shown love to you by nominating you
  • Answer the 11 questions
  • Nominate 11 bloggers for the same award in the spirit of sharing love and solidarity with our blogging family
  • Ask them 11 questions!

Questions and Answers:

  1. What’s something you do under stress?

I doodle comical little drawings (like a T-rex destroying a building with its teeny-tiny arms or stick people doing weird stuff), to make myself laugh and distract my brain for the stress. It actually works really well, I would highly recommend it to anyone that feels a little stressed out. So, much better than giving yourself an ulcer.

  1. What’s your opinion on abstract art?

I love abstract art. Any piece of art that can grab peoples’ attention and have them staring at it in wonder, for a prolonged space of time, is truly amazing. There’s just something fascinating and very intriguing about abstract art.  (I also love Surrealism and Expressionism, for those same reasons).

791efe99-de0d-4249-9e31-eed81885f5a0

My attempt at abstract art. I call it Trippe Don Pain Tcans.

     3. What’s your opinion on poetry?

Saying that I’m from the land of saints and scholars, I also think poetry is amazing. It’s like wizardry with words. It’s kind of incredible how a few words used in a particular way, can be so emotive and thought-provoking.

  1. Do you believe in long-distance online relationships?

Unlike the tooth fairy, the bogeyman and underpants gnomes, I’m pretty sure they exist. Whether they work, probably depends the people involved.

  1. Do you think you should have a deeper understanding of your best friend or your romantic partner?

Not sure if you’d really want my opinion on relationships. I’m pretty much an idiot, when it comes to those sorts of things and once thought a good solution to this problem, would be to make my best friend, my romantic partner. Yeah, no surprise there, that didn’t turn out too good.26ec05f2-3a6e-4fd4-8161-55dba0b1df8b

  1. Favourite season and why?

Summer because it occasionally stops raining, the place looks very pretty with all the flowers in bloom and it’s not as cold.

  1. Which ancient civilization is your favourite?

The Incas. As a civilisation it sounds brutal as fudge and surreal with all the human sacrifices and stuff. But Glob, is it fascinating to read about, especially pachacuti (mad bas****). If you’re wondering who pachacuti is, here’s a little song to help you out.

  1. When do you think the world will end, if ever?

When the sun pulls the earth too close, to it great fiery surface. Causing the seas to boil and the land to become a fiery inferno. Killing every living thing on this earth. Eventually, the sun will obliterate our moon and rid the earth of it’s ozone layer. Under the pressure of our great fiery star, the earth will break and crumble into billions of pieces. Which will then be incinerated by the sweltering touch of the sun.
The good news is, that’s not going to happen for about a few more billion years, so we can all relax and forget about it.

  1. What’s the scariest horror movie (or any type of horror fiction) trope?

Anything with clowns. Clowns are just plain terrifying, with their sinister smile, showy clothing, big floppy shoes and creepy demeanour. I hate clowns, so much. Horror movies like I.T, can go fudge themselves because I won’t be watching them.1dd165fa-bd00-41e5-be68-90024e0a81cd

  1. If you murder someone, how would you dispose of the body?

Wow, this has taken quite the dark turn.
I guess I would try to necromancy them back to life while crying like a b**ch, because it would kind solve two problems at once. Firstly, no one would be dead and secondly, there would be no body because it would be up and walking about.

  1. If you murder someone, how would you commit the murder?

I’d kill them with kindness. I’d make them so happy that their heart would explode with joy.

UNIQUE BLOGGER AWARD

unique-blogger-awardThe Fantastic The Spooky Red Head nominated me for this award. Thank you The Spooky Red Head, I appreciate you nominating me very much and also think everyone should show you some love by checking your blog out.

Rules:

1. Share the link of the blogger who has shown love to you by nominating you
2. Answer the questions
3. In the spirit of sharing love and solidarity with our blogging family, nominate 8-13 people for the same award
4. Ask them 3 questions

Questions and Answers:

  1. What’s that one song that you like, but you refuse to admit that you do like it to anyone?

Love questions like this, because they really get you thinking about how cringey you want to go. I’ll be kind this time and not go to a painful cringey level, by choosing the Pokémon theme song.
In my defence, this song is awesome to exercise to or do anything to. It just so Glob darn motivational. Definitely my go to montage music.

  1. If you could pick your own first name, what would you choose to call yourself?

Hmm…. this is a tough one. I’m not sure if any other name would suit me, but if I had to pick a name, I’d change it to my nickname, Nel or Nelly.

  1. Do you have a favourite quote?

I have loads of favourite quotes, but my favourite Irish quote is:
“Níl sa saol seo ach ceo, is ní bheimid beo, ach seal beag gearr.”
– The Secret of Kells

Translation: “There is nothing in this life but mist and we will only be alive, but for a short time”. Or- “This life is only a mist, and we will live, but a little short time”. Either translation is acceptable.
It doesn’t translate that well, but when spoke in Irish it sounds a lot sweeter and more beautiful. It’s basically the Irish version of life’s too short to be worrying about silly things, what happens, happens.

Nomination:
I still have a handful more of awards to respond to, so I’m going to leave nominations until I get to the end.

Hope you enjoyed this post and as always Thanks for reading.

Cold, Lost and Left with Sal (Comic Strip Chapter 2)

Chapter 2: Splinter

Like the last chapter, this Comic Strip reads left to right.

thumbnail_99109d8e-2e09-409b-bb5f-229739b5b682thumbnail_85c19856-47a9-4435-9a03-02151400a328thumbnail_11cdf634-4278-4c0f-9ca3-f12670ff725dthumbnail_bf5ec72a-d30e-4145-87b8-daac05e0d997 (1)Hope you’ve enjoyed chapter 2 of Cold, Lost and Left with Sal. Drawing this comic strip digitally definitely seems like the way to go. I’m so much happier with how chapter 2 turned out. Still not sure whether I want to make this a regular thing, though.

Anyway, Thanks for reading and hope you enjoy the next chapter.

So, I Made A Comic Strip

(Apologies for the lateness of this post, I was experiencing some technical difficulties, impairing my ability to post).

I’ve decided to take the plunge and try out the first of my ideas for this blog.

That’s right, I’ve created a little comic strip. It’s called Cold, Lost and Left with Sal, but I don’t want to ramble on, so I’ll explain how the comic strip is read, set the scene and leave you to enjoy it.

It reads left to right (Sorry if that’s disappointing, my brain would have exploded, if I tried to write/draw it like a manga). To make it easier to read, I’ve used block capital but in case you can’t read my rubbish handwriting, I’ve also put the dialogue below each page. Hope you enjoy.

Cold, Lost and Left with Sal
After a mysterious event, nearly all humans disappeared from the face of the earth. Now seemingly the only two people left on earth. Our main characters, the sensitive Luke and the peculiar Sal, must roam the earth trying to survive.

Chapter-1: All that’s left

thumbnail_20180423_094523Page 1:
Sal (the character wearing the crown): Thanks for waiting Luke,

Sal: I…

Sal: Here…. You’re going to catch a cold.

Sal: We don’t know what exactly happened, that day.

thumbnail_20180423_115833Page 2:
Sal: There’s still hope of finding them.

Sal: Come on. We better get moving.
I have good news

Sal: The town’s only about 2 miles away. If we make it before night fall, we can sleep inside for once.

Luke (the spiky haired character): Sweet.
Hmm… wait. Sal, won’t you get cold without your blanket?

Sal: It’s okay, I’ll find another. If I get cold before then, I’ll just cuddle a stray dog or something.

Luke: Hehe… Gross

Sal:  If I get ticks, I promise to share.

Luke: You could always cuddle me!

Sal: No chance. I’d rather take me chances with the dog.

So, that was my first attempt at creating a comic strip. Hope you could read everything okay. Being dyslexic and having dyspraxia, spelling, grammar and handwriting are my weak points. So, apologies if you couldn’t read the comic strip for any of those reasons. The good news is, I’ve drawn the next chapter digitally and it looks hell of a lot better.

This has been one of those posts I’ve been uncertain about (so far out of my comfort zone and the technical difficulties didn’t help). But it was really fun to make, so I plan on making at least a few more chapters and we’ll decide from there, whether to keep this as a regular thing or not.

Thanks for reading. I’m off now to attempt to bring you the second chapter of this comic strip.

A little update

cropped-thumbnail_85e9e794-0e59-4276-ad93-d33c3b7a4d6014.jpgSince I’ve finally updated my header image, to this drawing of a cute little vampire (inspired by my niece’s “I see you” face), I thought it would be a good idea to do a little update post. Before I try out a few new things and cause confusion.

But before anyone gets too excited, don’t worry I’ll still be doing reviews, creating art and finishing the Fullmetal alchemist series (when I eventually get time to finish part 3. It’s been tough, finding time for anime 😥 ).

Updates

Due to a few recent changes that’s left me with less time for blogging, I haven’t been able to post as regularly as I use to. This has been bugging the fudge out of me, so I’ve come up with a few little solutions to try out, that are listed below.

Possible solutions:

– A Comic Strip
Something I’ve always wanted to do but lacked the confidence to do so. I could do with a little more self-belief, so I’m going to try my best and create something worth reading.

-If the comic strip idea plops, then I might try illustrated Storytelling posts.
Similar to the comic strip. However, each post would be a different story, rather than a continuous story.

-Challenge posts
Not like blog tags, more like those fun art and 30 days challenges people do.

– An Art series
Basically, a series of fun themed art posts. For example, transforming horror movie monsters into something cute and cuddly or drawing a line from a song.

I’m planning on trying out at least 3 of these ideas and whichever one people seem to enjoy most, I will keep as a regular thing on this blog.

Thanks for reading and let me know what you think of these solutions in the comments below.

Something to motivate me, to do the Comic Strip

The Peony Rose Rabbit (Paint with Me)

thumbnail_20180404_173344I am a woman in a mission this week. That mission being: “inspire some of the beautiful people on WordPress to mess about with paint.” (that’s an awfully long title, so we’ll shorten it to “Mission Paint with Me”.)

So, what does this mission entail you ask? Well, it’s simple. I create a montage, where I climb a really tall mountain with a bunch of art supplies, tied to my back. When I get to the top, I jump and punch the air and everyone is so inspired by this act of art enthusiasm, that they immediately run off and start painting on the first paintable surface they find.

Okay, I’ll stop my messing and tell you what I’m really going to do. I’m going to make a tutorial using my rabbit drawing, to show everyone a nice and simple way to use acrylic paint.

But before we get started, I should warn you that acrylic paint can stain tables or other surfaces, so it’s best to put an old table mat or paper down before you start (I learnt the hard way and now my table mat has blue stripes). Right, now that that’s out of the way, let’s get started:

thumbnail_20180328_174725Step 1: Draw yourself a rabbit and a flower.
It doesn’t have to be perfect or a masterpiece. But if you’re having trouble, find something round to draw around and try making a little cartoon round-head rabbit, instead.

Also, don’t worry about erasing guidelines, if you’re sketching. The paint will cover them and you won’t be able to see them.

thumbnail_20180328_184125Step 2: Line your drawing and give everything a pale under coat of paint.
At this point, I would recommend going over the outlines of your drawing with paint, because it’s very easy to lose the outline under layers of paint, which can be so frustrating.

As for the under coat. It’ll help you plan the colours of painting, help build colour and make it easier to control the paint in the next layer.

After this step its best to let the paint completely dry.

thumbnail_20180329_181248Step 3: Paint the background.
It might seem strange starting with the background, but this allows you to paint closer to edges of your drawing and makes painting the background a lot easier.

If like me, you get distracted and get green paint on the rabbit, don’t panic. It can easily be corrected by waiting for it to dry, then painting over the area with a little bit of white paint.

Tip: If you’re using more than one colour on the background, keep in mind how the colours mix together. For example, I used 2 shades of green, lemon yellow and Pink. So, I had to keep in mind that if the pink mixed with the greens it would turn a brown colour.

thumbnail_20180329_181340Step 4: Paint the Flower.
If you want to try to capture light and shadow, you can lighten the pink with white and darken it with red. On the leaves and stem try using the yellow with the greens, to capture light.

If you find that too difficult, don’t worry. Instead, try painting the leaves and flower petals in a way that shows their shape (meaning, paint them so you can see the leaves and the flower from the background).

Let everything dry completely before moving on to the next step.

thumbnail_20180404_172917Step 5: Paint the rabbit.
Again, you can try capturing light and shadow. But if you find it too difficult, try looking at a picture of a rabbit and painting the lighter and darker parts of it’s fur.

At this point, don’t worry about making the paint look like fur, that happens in the next step. This step is more about building colour and capturing light and dark.

Tip: If you accidentally got green on the rabbit back in step 3, pay a little extra attention to those areas. To make sure they blend in with the rest of the rabbit.

Let the paint dry.

thumbnail_20180404_173424Step 6: Attempt to paint the rabbit’s fur.
This is probably the hardest step of this painting. I find this step difficult too, so don’t feel bad if you can’t do it. It can be kind of tricky to get right.

YouTube and books recommend using little brush strokes, to paint clumps of hair rather than individual hairs and use references pictures of rabbits.

That mightn’t be much help to you. So, the additional tips I would give you are, look at fur first hand (I took a trip to the pet shop to look at rabbits’ fur. They were so cute), try capturing the direction the fur grows in and try capturing the light changes in the fur. Hopefully that will be of more help to you.

So, that was my painting tutorial of The Peony Rose Rabbit. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed it and if you were following along, hopefully now you’ve got your very own lovely painting of a rabbit and flower.

If you have thing questions, feel free to ask them in the comments below. I’d be happy to answer them as best I can and as always, Thanks for reading.
