Drawing BTS Chibi

thumbnail_20181220_114722After looking at a hell of a lot of BTS fan art, I decided to give the whole fan art thing a go and add my own wee twist to it. I love drawing chibi characters, so I drew all the members of BTS as chibi and tried my best to capture their likeness. Hope you enjoy!

thumbnail_20190108_191733This post would be a little on the short side if it ended here, so I’d like take this opportunity to add a personal touch to this post by telling you all how I got into K-pop. Considering how much anime openings I have in my playlists, it’s kind of surprising that I didn’t stumble upon K-pop on my own. Strangely, it was actually my niece that got me into K-pop. She asked me one day if I had ever listened to BTS and I said no. Which caused her little face to light up with delight and she very excitedly started showing me music and choreography videos of BTS on YouTube.

Love pink hair.

My honest first impression of BTS was “dang, they sure can dance and that colourful hair is so amazing. Not a 100% sure if I like the music but this is really entertaining.” About 3 songs later and after hearing the song, Blood, Sweat and Tears, BTS started to really grew on me and I was loving this little BTS jam session. Any uncertainty left me and I was 100% sure that I like this band.

Chibi J-Hope kind of looks a little possessed. Apologies for that.

After that, I was really curious about K-pop and went on a huge K-pop binge watch/listen. It was awesome and left my wondering, why it took me so long to realise how much fun K-pop is (honestly, I wish I listened to it sooner). From there I got sucked into the fandom and now even have a favourite member (bias) in certain groups (in BTS it was originally Suga, but then Jimin won me over, so now I have 2 bias). My appreciation for K-pop may be a little cringey at times, but its something I really enjoy.

Just a couple of buds holding hands.

Hope you enjoyed this post. If you did, I might make another post like this about anime. Anime is something I’ve loved since childhood, so that post would be considerably longer.

As always, Thanks for reading!

A Rather Spooky Painting

Last time I painted a piece like this someone called it emo art (don’t worry it was just friendly banter and there was no nastiness meant by it), which really made me laugh. To be honest, I found this observation hilarious because it was very true. When I’m not making cute art, I’m creating dramatic spooky art. Some of the things I’ve painted, you could imagine an emo kid painting them while flicking their fringe back and listening to emo music. Strangely though, I’ve never been an emo and haven’t made any plans to become one (seems like a lot of work and would ruin my fall into the cupboard and wear whatever I fall into, approach to dressing). So, then what’s with the spooky looking painting below you ask?

thumbnail_20181214_132540For some reason when I paint from the heart this happens. A rather dramatic spooky looking piece of art that usually features dark colours, is created (I’ll add a few other examples of this at the end). I’m not exactly sure why this art style developed, but I think it’s partly to do with preferring darker colours and liking the way red and black looks together (maybe it’s just my inner emo shining through).

Getting back to explaining this latest spooky painting. In a nutshell, the stress of this time of year was getting to me, so I sat down to unwind by doing a bit of painting and the black paint started calling to me. It was saying “Nellsbert Kelleeic the first (not my actual name) use me and embrace the emo-ness within. Also take my friend red and use them well. Black paint alone to not enough to achieve the true emo look”. So, I listened and took the black and red paint (as well as the blue and white) and painted my little heart out. I switched black and red paint here, there and everywhere until finally I looked down and before me appeared a painting of a woman and a red eye shadow monster.

Okay that might be a little exaggerated, what actually happen was I seen the black paint and took a liking to it and thought red would go well with it. Then in true stressed out bunny fashion, I assumed the “need sleep” position, with one arm and head laying across the table and with the other arm, I painted whatever came to mind. In the process ruining my paint palette with black paint (which was formerly my dinner plate, until it was cracked and chipped by me dropping it), that is hell to get off. Oops!

thumbnail_20181214_142238But don’t worry, after an overnight soaking in bubbly water and a hell of a lot of scrubbing, I restored it to its former cracked and chipped beauty. Best darn paint palette I ever owned!

thumbnail_20181214_142424Hope you enjoyed this post and its mildly darker art style and
As always, Thanks for reading!

Flowery Doodle Tree

There was still quite a bit of Gouache paint to be used up, so I thought I might as well paint some more of my flower doodles. It would be a crying shame to let good paint go to waste or to let it explode all over the cupboards, again.

thumbnail_20180629_080347This time I went with the flowery doodle tree, that I probably drew after drinking too much coffee (I draw the weirdest things, when on a caffeine buzz). Just a little warning, I was in a bit of a mood when painting the background so it turned out a little strange. But not to worry, nearly everyone here is in a bit of a mood because of this second heatwave we’re experiencing.
We usually don’t get really hot weather like this here, so most aren’t use to the heat and can’t handle it that well. To be frank at this point, most of us are feeling completely bucked, rather grumpy and cursing global warming (also not to mention, a little sunburnt).

thumbnail_20180629_080432As you can see, I was so moody that I wasn’t even going to entertain, staying in the lines. Mainly because unlike water colours, Gouache paint is surprisingly forgiving. So, it really doesn’t matter that much, if you go over the lines. You can always just paint over it and blend it in.
As for the colour choice. Moody me apparently likes to be dramatic with colour.

thumbnail_20180629_163611So here we have it, the finished piece. Thankfully, after being left to dry for a few days, the background lightened up a bit and doesn’t look as morbid now.

Hope you’ve enjoyed the creation of the Flowery Doodle Tree. Thanks for reading.

But before a head off to melt a little more on this heat. I’d like to announce that I created an Instagram account for this blog a wee while ago, so if you like to see more of what I get up to, you can follow me over on Instagram.

Doodle Flower to Beautiful Flower

thumbnail_20180613_204601As surprising as it may seem, when I’m not doodling dinosaurs and stick people for my own amusement, I doodle flowers. After discovering that half of my tubes of Gouache paint exploded inside the cupboard (it was like paint grenade went off in there), because of the recent heatwave. I decided to go through my book of doodles and use up the remaining paint, before I have to clean up anymore sticky rainbow coloured messes.

thumbnail_20180613_204210There’s quite a lot of flower doodles in my book, but this is the one I chose. It’s a pretty simple drawing of circles and spikes, but I thought I could turn it into something nice. I used a really light pencil, so I lined it with paint to make it easier for you guys to see.

thumbnail_20180613_204415People never really talk about how long it takes them to complete a painting. Maybe there’s some sort of strange taboo or fear of painting envy surrounding it, but I can’t see the harm in it. So, this the doodle after the first painting session. It probably doesn’t look it, but this is about 2 hours of painting. I have no idea whether that’s fast or really slow, but I’ve seen people spend even longer than that in a session.

thumbnail_20180614_141806It only took me 2 painting sessions to turn the doodle into a pretty painting. The second session did take a little longer, because of the details on the petals. However overall, that’s still a pretty short length of time spent completing a painting (my acrylic paintings usually take days to complete). The feeling of satisfaction you get after finishing and looking at the end product, so completely worth the time and effort put into the painting.

Gouache paint is really pigmented and fun to experiment with, but considering its price, its smell (it kind of smells funky) and the fact it doesn’t hold up in heat, I don’t think I would get it again.

Thanks for reading and hope you liked the flower.

The Drawing Style Challenge

I’ve seen this challenge done so many times and always wanted to try it for myself. But as usual, I didn’t have the confidence to give it a go. To tell the truth, I thought I wouldn’t be able to draw in different styles and would make a mess of the challenge. However, I’m trying a new approach, called self-belief and I’m now at least, giving the things I think I’m too rubbish to do, a go. So, without further delay I give to you, my attempt at the Drawing Style Challenge.

thumbnail_20180530_225246For anyone wondering what this challenge is about, it’s where you choose a selection of cartoon or animation styles and attempt to draw yourself in each style. I have chosen 6 styles and have used Gouache paint for the coloured drawing (because I need more practice with them). I’ve decided to be really creative with this challenge, so I hope you enjoy.

Tim Burton (Nel-Ward Scissorhands)

thumbnail_20180530_225515Edward Scissorhands is my favourite Tim Burton character, so for this style I went with drawing myself like Edward Scissorhands. While still including some of the trademarks of Tim Burton’s style. Hence, Nel-Ward Scissorhands was born.

Pokémon (Not quite right Charmander)

thumbnail_20180530_230037Why draw yourself as a human, when you can be an extremely cute fire-breathing pocket monster. I drew myself as a not quite right Charmander, because if I was a Pokémon I wouldn’t want to fight other Pokémon, to an inch of their life. I’d rather befriend the other Pokémon (hence why I drew the flower). I’d essentially be Olaf from frozen, in Charmander form.

thumbnail_20180530_225413Also, Charmander is my favourite starter Pokémon.

Adventure Time (Princess Blue)

thumbnail_20180530_230403As a style, I find Adventure Time very cute, creative and funny at times. I decided to keep in trend with the shows endless number of princesses and turned myself into Princess Blue. Also, humans in this show seem pretty plops, compared to the other characters. So, I wasn’t drawing myself as one of them.

South Park

thumbnail_20180530_231145I had a little trouble creating skin tone with the Gouache paint and couldn’t achieve that weird tone of most of the South Park characters. So, I ended up just settling with the usual paint combination, I’d use with watercolours. Other, then that little disaster I think I done an okay job of this style.

The Walking Dead Comic

thumbnail_20180530_232156Since the previous attempts went so well, I decided to challenge myself a little bit more. The Walking Dead Comic has some really cool art work and is something I really like. However, as I’ve learnt it’s a very hard style to draw in and all I’m going to say about this attempt is, I love how that sword handle turned out. Best darn sword handle, I’ve ever drawn.

We Bare Bears (Sun Bear)

thumbnail_20180530_233059Art style wise, I really like how We Bare Bear is drawn. For this style, I drew myself as a Sun Bear, because again why be human when you can be a cute bear. Also, I’ve recently learnt that sun bears are a rather short bears and are only around 5ft tall. I am also only around 5ft tall, so I can relate to the sun bear’s shortness.

This has been the most fun art challenges, I’ve taken part in so far and because of that, I’ve decided to make a part 2. I want to make sure this is still fun for you guys, too. So, I’m going to let you guys decide which styles I draw in part 2. All you have to do is let me know in the comments below, which cartoon, comic, manga, anime or animation style (or styles), you’d like to see me attempt next.
Thank you in advance to anyone taking part. I appreciate all your suggestions, very much.

As always, hope you’ve enjoyed this post and Thanks for reading.
