Speed Drawing Yuri on Ice (Part 2)

As promised, part two of the Yuri on ice speed drawing (for a recap of part 1 click here). I was hoping to get this out soon, but unfortunately this week has been extremely stressful and busy, so things didn’t go as planned. It’s been one of those weeks where your patience and ability to remain calm are truly tested and to top it all off, I’m feeling a little height conscious at the minute (I was mistaken for a child at the Halloween fair. I know I’m a bit on the short side and under 5.3ft/160cm, but glob I most definitely do not look like a child. Peeps need to go to Specsavers to get their eyes tested).
Getting back on track, in this video we pick up where we left off and add light and a bit of colour variation to Yuri’s face. Which surprisingly takes a lot less time than adding shadow, so we also tackle the eye, hair and background. Thankfully my habit of canvas spinning is less noticeable in this part. Hope you enjoy! (If the video appears blurry increase the videos Quality setting, to a number above 360p. YouTube’s default settings don’t seem to work well on digital art. This should fix any blurriness.)

To finish this post of I thought I’d give a quick insight into the techniques used in this video. This piece has quite a lot of layers and required quite a few different brushes, but the main technique is to roughly determine where the areas of light and shadow are, blend and tidy the edges and adjust the opacity (Canvas spinning is optional). You can skip the tidying step by doing things more precisely and neatly first time around, but I find you waste a lot time doing that and the end results are the same (plus there’s something strangely satisfying about cleaning up the edges).

Hope you’ve enjoyed this post and…

As always Thanks for reading.IMG_0044

Speed Drawing Yuri on Ice (Part 1)

While creating the artwork for the Yuri on ice review, I realised I could actually record the process. So as a bit of fun, I recorded myself painting Yuri’s head and made it into a speed drawing. To keep the video at a reasonable length I’ve split the speed drawing into two parts. The second part I’ll post next week when I find some decent background music for it (the background music to this one is a bit meh).

Originally, I was going to do a voice-over for the video to add a personal touch, but unfortunately suffered an awful bout of shyness and self-consciousness about my rather raw accent. Narrating an entire video somehow seemed a lot more daunting, than voicing a character in an audio comic. So, instead I created a few quick drawings for the video and rescued a few old drawings from WordPress media and put them to a new use. Though, I’m not a pro at digital drawing, I hope you enjoy this speed drawing
(A little heads up, for some reason YouTube’s auto Quality setting is sometimes making the video look blurry. If this happens click on the videos settings button which is the little cog shaped button, then click on Quality and select a number above 360p. This should fix any blurriness).

Hopefully you’re not dizzy after watching that, apologies if you are. If anything, you could call this an energetic attempted at speed drawing. After sitting down and really analysing this video, I’ve noticed I tend to do it when thinking or swapping the stylus from the left to the right hand. So, hopefully in the next attempt I’ll be able to refrain from doing it (although, being able to spin and draw at the same time is a talent in itself).

Hope you enjoyed this attempted at speed drawing. If all goes well part 2 should be posted very soon and…

As always thanks for reading/watching.

Weird Art Habits (Part 1- Staring at Stuff)

Since taking drawing more seriously, I’ve picked up a few strange habits, that I didn’t have before. The main one being, staring at art and intently studying the artist’s brush strokes, linework, shading, colour palette and how they captured light. It’s a bit on the weird side I know, but you’d be surprised by what you can learn from just looking closely at a piece of art.
It was while doing this that I discovered a few techniques, that looked incredibly fun to try out. So, in this post I will try out one of these techniques. One which is used in pencil drawings, for shading and creating texture. Saying as I learnt this from staring at pencil drawings, I’m not sure of the actual name for this technique, but would describe it as a messing scribbly scratchy way of shading, which uses several different grades of pencils.

thumbnail_20180901_114837Originally, I wasn’t going to make this post and only wanted to see how the technique worked. But the results at the ¼ way point looked kind of good, so I decided to turn it into a post. At this stage, some of this picture maybe too lightly drawn to make out, but what I had drawn was half a face and flowers. That may sound a little disturbing, but I couldn’t decide whether to draw a face or flowers, so settled on drawing both as I wasn’t planning on sharing the drawing.

thumbnail_20180912_223437Luckily the finished piece doesn’t look all that disturbing. It looks more like the woman in the picture got really drunk and fell into a flower bed, where she slept with her face half planted all night. Then in the morning, woke up with her face half covered in soil, flowers and foliage. Putting that aside, I really like how this technique turns out. It gives the skin a very nice texture and looks more realistic than the other techniques I’ve used and gives the drawing some life. As for the flowers, it works just as good as the other techniques I’ve used, but is more fun. So, with all that in mind, I would definitely like to dedicate time to try and perfect this method of shading.

Hope you’ve enjoyed this post and….
As always, Thanks for reading.

Doodle Fun

We have finally made it back to the land of the living (okay that might be a tad on the dramatic side). What I mean is I’m feeling a lot better now and nearly fully recovered. Thank you all for the lovely comments and well wishes while I was ill.
As promised I’m making a post of the best doodles I did while flu ridden. Apologies for the random writing around the doodles. These doodles were done while professor YouTube was educating me on the workings of Hangul (the Korean alphabetic system) and Katakana (one of the Japanese syllabic writing systems) and I sort of practiced a little on the page while doodling and watching YouTube videos (Had to do something to occupy my mind. Lying in bed, staring at the ceiling was dreadfully boring, so I might as well have used the time to educate myself. Also writing systems are really interesting).

thumbnail_20180918_175958So, this is the first page, I was really into doodling little men that day. If you’re wondering about the Hangul (writing) on this page, it’s mostly just random words and me using what I learnt to complain about having the flu.

thumbnail_20180918_181119This is my favourite doodle on this page. There are a few guidelines showing, but it’s still really cute.

thumbnail_20180918_181350Although, this turned out a little crooked (probably because it was drawn from a weird angle), I still really like this doodle, too.

thumbnail_20180918_181226Not a fan of this doodle, as you can tell (but in saying that, high fever me thought the speech bubble was fringing hilarious. God, I must have been delirious, at that point).

thumbnail_20180918_180448The second page is a little busier. I’m a little more familiar with Katakana, so was listening more than watching the screen (meaning more doodling). Katakana is phonetic and is used for translating non-Japanese words into Japanese. This includes names, so I decided to give my doodles names using Katakana (boredom was very strong at this point).

thumbnail_20180918_182422I’m extremely proud of this little dog, Tobi. I doodled him in under 2 minutes and he turn really good. (If you’re wondering what the fox and fish are called, I named the fox Toboe and the fish Tuna.)

thumbnail_20180918_182936 (1)A little close up of the stick people tree. Stick people are a hell of a lot of fun to doodle. If you’re feeling stressed or horrible, I highly recommend doodling stick people. It’ll cheer you right up.

So that was my doodles. Hope you enjoyed them. I have to take it easy for the next while (don’t want to get really sick again), so thanks for your patience and…
As always Thanks for reading.

The Dreaded Lurgy Attacks

ciel 1Just a quick wee post to explain why there was no post from me this week. Unfortunately, the dreaded lurgy got me and now I’m rather ill with some type of flu-like sickness. I get sick kind of often, so would usually soldier on and create some type of little post for that week. But this week soldiering on really isn’t an option, feeling like a mangled zombie has greatly impaired my writing ability.

Reading blog posts makes me happy and helps me forget before feeling like the Grim reaper is stalking me. So, you’ll still see me around reading posts, however I’m not sure when I’ll be well enough to post properly. But, so this blog doesn’t go dead, I might make a post of the little doodles I did this week.

Anyway, hope you are all doing well and thanks for your patience.

Finding A Little Animation

While searching deep in the memory of my computer trying to retrieve lost drawings, I came across something kind of funny that I had completely forgotten about. It was a little animation I created well over a year ago, when I had gotten really curious about how animation worked and decided to try it myself. Granted this animation is only 4 seconds long and the art work isn’t spectacular (my art skills have greatly improved since then). But, I remember making this little animation and it taking forever (several hours) to create just 4 seconds. Then being all chuffed, when it was finally finished and played through smoothly.

To make it easier to watch I uploaded it to YouTube, but don’t worry I’m not leaving you all to become a YouTuber. Videos just upload nicer on YouTube and load a lot quicker, making it the better option.

It might not be that pretty, but it was my first attempt at animation and I thought it would be cool to share with you all. Looking back on this, it’s rather funny because I made it just after watching Cat Soup and was inspired by the wee boat the cats sail in. All I can say is that it could have been worse, I could have made an animation about that Mickey Mouse impressionist from Cat Soup. Which would have been creepy and messed up on so many levels.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed this little find and if I ever find the time, I’ll try to make another little animation like this one (hopefully it’ll be a little better).

As always, Thanks for reading

The Problem with Finishing A Really Good Show.

pick 3Sadly, this week I was a sick wee pup with a thumping headache and a stomach bug. Even just moving my arms made my head unbearably painful, so drawing has been out of the question this week (hence the use of images in this post and no art work). This means I couldn’t create my usual posts this week or add colour to poor Finny.

Though my stomach still isn’t great, I’m feeling a little better and that Glob awful headache has gone. So, I thought instead of posting nothing this week, I’d take this opportunity to get all of you guys opinion on something.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you likely know about the series of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood reviews I was doing. Well, I’ve finished the series (expect the last review very soon) and have a bit of a problem now. The show was so good, that I don’t think I’ll be able to find another show as good as it to review next. So, here’s where all of your opinions come in to play. Since all of you will be reading the review, thought it’d be nice to share my anime to watch list and let you guys pick, which anime you’d like me to review next.

My Anime to Watch List:

One Punch man- A guy spent over an hour telling me about this anime and I have to say, it sounds hilarious. A superhero that wins his fights in only one blow! That definitely sounds like it would be worth a watch, if only for fun.

pick 1Fruits Basket- I know shocking, isn’t it? A little secret about me is that I have a really girly side, I mostly keep hidden and occasionally I like to indulge in girly stuff. Every so often, I get a little craving for watching something extremely girly and as a lot of people sing this anime’s praises, it might be worth checking out.

Erased- An anime with a huge mystery, where the main character is sent back in time to save his classmate from a murderer. It’s a favourite of a blogger I follow. He has very good taste and makes it sound like an incredibly exciting watch.

Serial Experiments Lain- This looks creepy as fudge and what I gather is, it’s about a girl who gains the ability to mess with reality, leading to some very twisted stuff happening. If it’s as creepy as it seems, it’ll make for an unbelievable watch.

School-Live!- I remember reading a lot of reviews on this anime and it sounded like a bit of an emotional roller-coaster, but at the same time kind of mind twisting.

Code Geass- An anime about a genius trying to change the world to his liking. Code Geass is compared a lot to Death Note and if it’s anyway as good as Death Note, it’ll be amazing to watch and review.

pick 5Death Parade- A Bartender holds games between recently dead people, to decide what happens their soul! Sounds crazy as hell, but in an interesting, “I want to learn more” sort of way and seems like quite the experience to watch.

Yuri on Ice- A sports anime about young men figure skating (am I the only one or does Blades of glory, comes to mind?). An anime, people keep telling me I should watch and about how beautiful Victor is. Truth be told, I’ve gotten rather curious about exactly how beautiful this Victor fella is.

Violet Evergarden- A young lady tries to rebuild her life after experiencing the rage of war. Sounds like quite the emotional watch. It was recommended to me by 2 other bloggers, so must be worth checking out.

My Hero Academia- A superhero anime about a boy gaining superpowers and going to hero school. It seems like an amazing hero anime and like something that would be really enjoyable. (Also, that green hair looks so awesome).

So, this is currently what’s on my “to watch list”, if you’d like to voice your opinion on these shows or recommend something else, please do in the comments below. It would be very much appreciated.

pick 4

Thanks for reading and hoping to be back to near full health soon.

Anime Torture- Early Morning Anime Alarms

A short while ago, I mentioned that my eldest Niece discovered anime. Making me both very proud and a little scared, because she loves to wind-up and is hell-bent on being annoying anime style. Long story short, she now uses anime related music to wake me up at silly o’clock in the morning (before 6am), to talk about or watch anime and anime related stuff with her.

But before anyone thinks my niece is just incredibly disrespectful. I was still a child when my niece was born and shared part of my childhood with her. So, we have more of a sister-like relationship and she is more like my annoying little sister, than my niece. Also, it’s awesome to share a common interest with her (I just wish she didn’t wake me up so early. Then again, I’m probably lazy and could do with waking up earlier).

Back on track, I thought it would make a fun post, if I rated the effectiveness of my early morning anime wake up calls. So, with that explained, let’s begin.

Lucky Star- Motteke Sailor Fuku:

If you fancy waking up in a state of confusion, wondering what the fudge is going on. This is the alarm clock for you. It will undoubtedly have you springing up in your bed, like Count Dracula in his coffin. However, if like me you struggle to find your words, just after being torn from the shores of Dreamland. You will most likely find yourself uttering random words, as you try to work out where the sound is coming from, in your confused state.
Rating: 8/10

Death Note- What’s up, people?!:

This is probably the most effective alarm you could ever have, so effective in fact that it’ll have you jump yourself awake, in fear and fall out of bed. However, it may actually be a little to good at scaring you awake and may cause you to suffer a massive heart attack, shortly after waking (ironic considering it’s from Death Note). Therefore, I would not recommend using this as your alarm.
Rating: 15/10 with the chance of death.

Attack on Titian- Guren no Yumiya:

Have you ever wanted to wake up feeling like you might have to fight a gang giant happy naked people, at any moment or like you might get kick in the face by a really attractive, but kind of small and grumpy man, at some point in the day? Well, this is definitely an alarm for you. All in all, it pretty darn good at getting you out of your scratcher.
Rating: 7/10

BTS-DNA:

I know, I know this isn’t anime music, it’s K-pop. But I guess, my niece wanted to mix things up a little and throw some K-pop in there. As for it’s effectiveness as an alarm, it’s just too gentle. It didn’t even make me flicker an eyelid. I just heard it and laid there with my eyes still shut, enjoying some BTS, then went back to sleep.
Rating: 3/10
Off topic; Glob RM voice! He has this Californian/L.A. accent and gosh darn it, it’s just so smooth and dreamy. It literally stops you in your track. Even if you’re not into K-pop, I would highly recommend just listening to RM talk. It’s amazing. (Hmmm, I wonder if RM’s voice would make a better alarm? What? Too creepy?)

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood-Yui (Again):

Need that little extra boost to get out of bed in the morning? If so, why not try this alarm on for size. The song itself is incredible (one of my favourite openings), but because of its instrumentals and beat, it makes a brilliant alarm. The intro alone is enough to wake even the deepest sleeper. Not to mention, it’s a bit of a good mood song and singing along, is almost irresistible.
Rating: 9/10

Pokémon- Gotta Catch Em All!:

Fancy waking up feeling like a king, like your day is going to be one amazing adventure and like the world is your oyster. Of course, you do. If you have to leave that wonderful place we call bed, you might as well feel great doing it. That’s why I would highly recommend this song for your alarm. Its intro is loud enough to rise you from your slumber and the rest of the song is so upbeat, it’ll make you want to get out of bed and have an amazing day.
Rating: 10/10

We’ve made it to the end of my anime alarm ratings. Hope you’ve had fun and maybe found you’re new morning alarm music. If you, have also found yourself in the presence of a young anime sadist or can think of any anime openings, that would make a good alarm, let me know in the comments below.

As always, Thanks for reading. I’m off now to get some sleep, before I’m woke up again by the beautiful screams of “What’s up, people?!” (Death Note).

The Silly Things That Life Just Wouldn’t Be the Same Without.

50486044-7085-416c-b7fc-3e836ad03ae3Another year has passed and I must again add 1 to my age and try to remember it. That’s right, it was my Birthday this month and to be honest I’m feeling rather old. I’m getting a little too close to 30, for my liking. But on the bright side, at least my hair hasn’t turned grey (Glob, has it had so many reasons to turn grey).

Last year I did a special bucket list post and I kind of wanted to keep the special B-day post thing going. So, I wrecked my brain for ideas and thought to myself, “what could I possibly write about. I can’t do a what I’ve learnt in over a quarter of a century post or an advice post. I’m still trying to work this world out.” Then something occurred to me.  Apart from things like family, having a roof over me head and food in my belly, it’s really the silly little things in life, that keeps me happy. Screw bags loads of money and a big house, if someone came and took away the silly little things, living would quickly become very miserable.

So, on that point I thought it would nice to share with you guys the silly things, that make me happy and that life wouldn’t be the same without.

1. The first cup of coffee of the day- Glob, words cannot express the incredible feeling of the first cup of coffee of the day. Maybe it’s just because I’m addicted to caffeine but fudge it’s a great feeling. It just makes facing the world seem that little less daunting and cures my serious case of morning grumpys and wanting the world to bugger off.

thumbnail_6c8fc79a-d866-4876-812d-29afa60b4a3d_1

One of my very early attempts of drawing a dog, digitally. I thought it would be cute to share it.

2. Dogs- I’m just going to say it; the world would be sh*te without dogs. They’re just these little happy creatures, that have this magical ability to instantly cheer people up. They don’t even have to try at it. By just being a dog and doing doggy things, they lift people’s mood and make them feel happy. Not to mention dog cuddles are the best.

3. Messing with paint- There’s just nothing more relaxing than messing and spreading paint around a page. I might not create anything I’d be willing to share on this blog or with anyone else, but the feeling of peace and contentment I get from it, is enough for me.

4. Anime- I’ve often thought of creating a post about why I love anime, but never got around to it. Anyway, the reason it’s made it onto my list is that without anime, I’d be an incredibly lost little soul. I know it’s silly (it’s made it onto a silly things list, so of course it’s silly), but anime is one of the very few things that can distract my catastrophizing brain and allow me to relax. When watching anime, I genuinely feel happy. I’d fall into the bottomless pit of misery without it.

5. Beautiful Anime Men and the Fan Art- Hmmm…. Yeah, the less said about this, the better. The personalities, the fan art, the otome games, the eye-candy, it’s all pretty amazing. I could possibly be that sort of anime fan but screw it, I’m only human.

9e9b520f-0e88-48e9-acf6-3daf91abd574

Nothing creepy going on here. Just an artist getting some well need practice in “anatomy” and a 27-year-old anime man, named Barnard putting his clothes on, to get ready for work.

6. Chocolate- In all seriousness, I don’t think I could cope without chocolate. It’s my little mood booster and without it, I probably would have died of sadness by now.

7. The armchair in front of the fire- It’s my safe zone. When I’m sitting in my armchair like a king, the world could go get sucked into a black-hole, for all I care. The fact it’s right next to the fire, just makes it all the sweeter.

8. Wandering Aimlessly Around the Woods- Spending a few hours (or a good part of the day), just walking in the silence of the woods, with only the odd sound of wildlife. With a dog or two for company/safety, not really caring where you’ll walking, too, is pretty darn relaxing and peaceful. Nothing clears your head like it.

9. Weird Stuff- Can’t get enough of the weird stuff. It’s just so fascinating. Weird animals, weird anime, movies, books, psychology and unusual people (the best type of people, in my opinion). There’s just so much that can be learnt from it. The world would be so very dull without weird stuff.fa28967c-967f-45ef-b9dc-9c0149c6dede10. Going for drives in the car- Okay, I’m beginning to see why my friend says, I’m like a wee lovable Likes going for walks, sitting by the fire, going in the car, likes having my hair pet (but pretends not too) and is easily excited. Yeah, that sounds like I’m a puppy alright. But hey at least I’m a lovable one. Besides I do all my best singing to the radio, in the car.

Thanks for reading the 10 silly things that life just wouldn’t be the same without. Hope you’ve enjoyed it and if you have any silly things that life wouldn’t be the same without, feel free to share them in the comments below.

I’m off now, to play frisbee and chase a cat.

Doodle Flower to Beautiful Flower

thumbnail_20180613_204601As surprising as it may seem, when I’m not doodling dinosaurs and stick people for my own amusement, I doodle flowers. After discovering that half of my tubes of Gouache paint exploded inside the cupboard (it was like paint grenade went off in there), because of the recent heatwave. I decided to go through my book of doodles and use up the remaining paint, before I have to clean up anymore sticky rainbow coloured messes.

thumbnail_20180613_204210There’s quite a lot of flower doodles in my book, but this is the one I chose. It’s a pretty simple drawing of circles and spikes, but I thought I could turn it into something nice. I used a really light pencil, so I lined it with paint to make it easier for you guys to see.

thumbnail_20180613_204415People never really talk about how long it takes them to complete a painting. Maybe there’s some sort of strange taboo or fear of painting envy surrounding it, but I can’t see the harm in it. So, this the doodle after the first painting session. It probably doesn’t look it, but this is about 2 hours of painting. I have no idea whether that’s fast or really slow, but I’ve seen people spend even longer than that in a session.

thumbnail_20180614_141806It only took me 2 painting sessions to turn the doodle into a pretty painting. The second session did take a little longer, because of the details on the petals. However overall, that’s still a pretty short length of time spent completing a painting (my acrylic paintings usually take days to complete). The feeling of satisfaction you get after finishing and looking at the end product, so completely worth the time and effort put into the painting.

Gouache paint is really pigmented and fun to experiment with, but considering its price, its smell (it kind of smells funky) and the fact it doesn’t hold up in heat, I don’t think I would get it again.

Thanks for reading and hope you liked the flower.
